Convocation Gowns 'Barbaric Colonial Relics': Ramesh

Stoking a potential controversy, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh today called as "barbaric colonial relics" the practice of wearing the traditional coloured robe at convocation ceremonies and publicly removed his own gown at one such event.

"I still have not been able to figure out after 60 years of Independence why we stick to this barbaric colonial relics," Ramesh said while addressing students at the seventh convocation of the Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM).

"I believe that these traditions are going on for ages and it is not at all necessary and not proper. With time we have to change and I strongly feel that this convocation dress should be changed," said Ramesh.

"Why do they wear caps, just to throw them in air for photographs," he added.

However, when his attention was drawn towards similar demands raised by two BJP ministers (Kailash Vijaywargiya and Archana Chitnis) in Indore last year during the convocation ceremony of Devi Ahilyabai Vishwa Vidyalaya (DAVV) that instead of gowns, degrees should be conferred in traditional dhoti-kurta, Ramesh said he don't want to involve himself in 'Swadeshi versus Videshi' (Indian versus foreign) debate.

Ramesh also posed a question as to why there cannot be a convocation with everyone sporting a simple dress.

"Why we cannot have a convocation in simple dress instead of coming dressed up as medieval vicars and popes," he asked, as he removed his gown worn over his trademark white kurta.

Ramesh's dramatic action drew a loud applause from the assembled gathering.

I am not agreed with him completely,

1 - this Gown is not Barbaric.

2- Wearing simple cloths is not great idea.

3- Throwing of caps really looks great in pics. now my point is that we need to change, yes we need to change but in a different way.

our Govt has to ask every university to introduce their own unique Convocation dress,
so that it became easy to recognize the university which student belongs to.

Convocation day is one of the great day in every students life, so it's good to see them in a different dress which they wear just once and have a memorable picture for the rest of their life.

Actor Nirmal Pandey, best remembered for his work in films like 'Bandit Queen' and 'God Mother' died on 18 February'2010,Thursday following a cardiac arrest.

He was 46 and is survived by his wife and two children, the actor was not keeping well for sometime and the end came at a private hospital this afternoon.

The actor established a niche playing negative characters on the big screen as well as on television, and his last project was the Telugu film 'Kedi', where he again played a villain.

A graduate from the National School of Drama, the actor is best known for films like, 'Iss Raat Ki Subah Nahin, 'Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya', 'One 2 ka 4' and 'Shikari'.

Pandey also held the rare distinction of winning an award in the 'Best Actress' category when he received the Valenti award in France in 1996 for his turn as a transvestite in Amol Palekar's 'Daayra'

A National School of Drama alumnus, Pandey began his career on the stage. He was associated with London-based theatre group Tara, and did plays like "Heer Ranjha", and "Antigone". He acted in around 125 plays. After doing bit roles in movies, he got his big break in Shekhar Kapur's acclaimed film "Bandit Queen" (1996) and in the same year featured in Amol Palekar's "Daayra" and Sudhir Mishra's "Is Raat Ki Subah Nahi". In 1998, he did "Train To Pakistan" and next year featured in "Hum Tum Pe Marte Hain". He also acted in several television serials including "Hatim" and "Princess Dollie Aur Uska Magic Bag".

He was not just a good actor but also an excellent singer,

Pandey had released an album called 'Jazba' in 2002 and . directed, 'Andhayug', a Hindi play, written by noted playwright Dharamveer Bharati.

I liked his style, voice and acting very much, one song from his album "Heer Ranjha" is a sufi song and is my most favorite song.

"May God Rest him in Peace."

Ram janambhoomi+Babri Masjid = Vivadit Parisar

Few years ago a building namely BABRI MASJID has been demolished by Thousands of Hidnus who were jointly known as KARSEWAK,
I am still confused that why the same activity is known by two different names, 6th December is celebrated as Black day by some Muslims and Some Hindus celebratee it as Victory Day.
i dont know why the demolition of just a building made by a foreign invader or better to call him a bloody Decoit known as Baabar, has collected some bricks and other construction material with the help of money that he Looted from innocent poor peoples and named it as BAABRI MASJID.
what the hell is this?????????????
no doubt a building in use for any religious activity is sacred and pious for the follower of that particular Religion,
but does the GOD(ALLAH) will be happy with the prayer(Namaz) that was offered to him in a building made with the blood of several poor peoples,
isn't it will be considered as the Mosque made with the money which itself considered as HARAAM in Holy Quraan itself.
now come to another angel, Ayodhya is completely a Hindu Place and the biggest example of it is that there are more then 300 Temples in that area were several century old.
It is easy to calculate that what the Mosque is doing between those Temples.???
